About the APIRR

The APIRR is a public database that incorporates Internet routing information within the full APNIC Whois Database. It can be used for route object registration and whois queries.

The APIRR is linked to the distributed Internet Routing Registry (IRR) and runs on a RIPE v3 database server using the Routing Policy Specification Language (RPSL). Several TCP-based tools are available to enable router configuration (for example, the IRRToolSet).

The APIRR provides Internet operators with the ability to:

  • debug routing problems
  • automatically configure backbone routers
  • perform network planning

Providers may obtain RPSL-capable IRR database server daemons to maintain a local mirror of Internet registry data:

Use of the APIRR

APIRR is a service for APNIC members and is currently free to all users. In future, fees may apply to non-members using the service.

Objects in the APIRR

Objects from the APNIC Whois Database have been loaded into the APIRR Database to allow users to reference existing database objects in this service. The objects copied from the APNIC Whois Database into the APIRR database are initially identical in all fields except the source and status fields. The source field reflects an object's presence in either the APNIC or APIRR database. The status field is mandatory in RIPE v3 and where it does not already exist will be set by APNIC to a suitable value.

Existing aut-num, inetnum and person objects are available in the APIRR database. Updated objects will be copied from the production v2 server to the APIRR pilot server on a regular basis.

Note: to prevent objects in the APIRR database being overwritten by updated objects from the APNIC Whois Database, please create objects for use only in the APIRR database instead of referencing existing APNIC objects.

APIRR, the APNIC Whois Database, and the APNIC Routing Registry

In mid December 2002, APNIC begins operating a fully functional Internet Routing Registry as part of the APNIC Whois Database. At this time, objects from the APIRR will be merged into the APNIC Routing Registry and the APIRR will cease to exist. For more information on how this may affect you, see:

The APIRR will remain fully operational until mid December 2002.
