Database cleanup project
About the project
In the Database SIG at APNIC 15, consensus was given to establish a project to clean up the APNIC Whois Database. The project has three actions:
Remove resource records outside APNIC maintained ranges
Remove records not referenced by valid APNIC Internet resources
Update records that are not RPSL compliant
APNIC maintained ranges include allocations made by IANA and records to be transferred to APNIC as part of the ERX project.
This includes contact person, role, and maintainer objects
To minimise disruption and keep APNIC members informed of the progress, the APNIC Secretariat will:
- Notify the APNIC community of the project timing and plan
- Notified record holders affected by the cleanup by all means available. For confidentiality reasons, the list of records to be updated or deleted will specify primary keys only.
- Remove/update records no less than 60 days after record holders have been notified
- Report cleanup activities in the Database SIG and Annual Members Meeting
Motivation
This project is created to maintain the three most important attributes of APNIC Whois Database:
- Quality
- APNIC Whois Database must contain correct data
- Performance
- Unused objects creates unnecessary burden to the server
- Usability
- RPSL non-compliant historical data cannot be updated to reflect the resource holder's current contact and maintainer information.
