ISOC calls for greater autonomy for key Internet organisation

At the US Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) public meeting on the transition of the Internet's domain name system (DNS) to the private sector, Internet Society (ISOC) President and CEO Lynn St. Amour outlined how key Internet organizations need to have enough autonomy to respond appropriately to the fast-changing technical and operational environment of the Internet. Advisory Group established to assist in convening the Internet Governance Forum

Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary-General announced the members of an Advisory Group to assist him convene the Internet Governance Forum. The members have been selected from government, the private sector and civil society and represent all regions of the world. The Regional Internet Registries are represented on the Advisory Group by Adiel Akplogan (AfriNIC) and Raúl Echeberría (LACNIC).
Date set for inaugural Internet Governance Forum in Athens

The dates for the first meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) have been announced. The IGF will take place over a four day period in Athens from 30 October to 2 November 2006. Details of the venue have yet to be released.
Secretariat created for Internet Governance Forum

The United Nations Secretary-General has announced the creation of a small Geneva-based Secretariat to help convene the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). The Secretariat will be headed by Markus Kummer, who was previously the Executive Coordinator of the Secretariat of the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG).
Internet governance meeting in Malta

Internet governance talks continue before WSIS in Tunis

There were many issues left undecided at the WSIS PrepCom 3 in Geneva, 19- 30 September 2005. Therefore, there will be two more gatherings to consolidate issues before WSIS in Tunis. The first meeting, titled "intersessional negotiation work", will be held 24-28 October 2005. The second meeting, a continuation of PrepCom 3 is open to observers and will be held just prior to the final meeting in Tunis. The continuation of PrepCom 3 will be held 13-15 November in Tunis. WGIG releases report on Internet governance

The Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) has released the "Report of the Working Group on Internet Governance". The WGIG was established in December 2004 to develop a working definition of Internet governance, identify the public policy issues relevant to Internet governance, and develop an understanding of the roles of the various actors in Internet governance. The recently released report, presented to the United Nations Secretary-General, summarises the WGIG's work on these issues:

On 10 July, the NRO (Number Resource Organization) and the ICANN GAC (Governmental Advisory Committee) held a rountable in Luxembourg on issues of Internet governance and management, with particular emphasis on issues of relevance to governments and regulators such as IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and Internet routing. Discussion about possible ITU allocations of IPv6
[7 April 2005]
On the governance mailing list, there has been discussion about how possible ITU and ICANN co-governance of IP addresses and domain names would affect IP address allocation methods. Much of the discussion is based on the assumption that the ITU would become an alternative IPv6 allocation body coexisting with the RIRs. Issues raised include database registration coordination, technical and policy needs. The discussion on IP issues starts with the post by Emma Bretherick:

Asia Pacific regional discussion

On 13 January 2005, the Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP) launched an Open Regional Dialogue on Internet Governance (ORDIG) to identify the key issues of importance in Internet Governance to the Asia Pacific community. Issues discussed so far have included:
- IP address distributed geographically versus on a needs basis
- Control and security of the root DNS servers
- The breadth of issues that should be covered by the term "Internet governance"
